“I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it….” Pablo Picasso
Perhaps I should adopt this quote as my mantra. My main object in painting is to improve. It is an obsession.
Painting to a theme is very important to me. It gives me a strong starting point. Sometimes the theme dictates the technique, or even the medium, and sometimes several mediums at the same time.
My goal is not to paint to a market but to be able to measure each work better than the previous. This unfortunately is not always the case with individual paintings but, in general, every passing year shows how far I have travelled on my journey.
Awards exhibitions give me the opportunity to see my work hanging in the company of my peers, one of the best ways to measure my progress. Sometimes I am successful, but not always. Those unsuccessful paintings return to my studio to be adjusted (if I can see the problem) or painted over completely, hopefully with a better result.
The wonderful thing about this is that there is always something to look forward to.
