Noela Mills

I started working as a professional artist after moving to Queensland in the mid 1990's. Before this, I was teaching Art in Victorian Secondary schools. My professional qualifications include a post graduate Bachelor of Education and a Diploma of Art and Design. I have exhibited and taught all over Australia, winning many awards. I am represented by a variety of galleries and I am in collections world wide.

I love working with abstract ideas and images. Some are based on landscapes, some are based on ancient cultures, some are simply explorations of design. I am especially inspired by texture and line. I see these elements all around me in the natural and man made environments, often in close up detail. I can be motivated by the texture of bark on a tree, or the tones and shadows created by a tangle of wire. I try to translate the 'essence' of the inspiration onto canvas or into jewellery, artist books, fibre works and mixed media installations. My personal evolution physically, emotionally and spiritually is tied to this creative process.

My working materials are often weird and wonderful. I use discarded objects such as bits of rusty tin, rope washed up on the beach, old tea bags and pre-loved fabrics, especially old silk kimono fabrics.

I prefer to use earthy, organic colour schemes as I find these to be an honest and noble reflection of nature, and of the decay process which happens to discarded materials. My found objects have their own history and contribute energy to the art work.

I try to tap in to the spirit of the object, allowing it to 'talk' to me. The work evolves even further as the viewer adds his or her own interpretation to the piece, forging links between myself, the objects, the viewer, and the eternal creative energy force.

I am currently producing exhibition and gallery work including a range of 'Wabi Sabi' jewellery based on the Zen Buddhist principles of simplicity, honesty and nobility. I also create jewellery in collaboration with Barry Smith, which we have branded 'Bazola' - a combination of Barry's fold form metal work and my collected and reworked materials.

I teach my design and mixed media techniques at major Arts festivals, residencies and workshops throughout Australia.
