Sandie Stallwood-Farrell ... 'Kelshan Cruthe' Sandie Stallwood-Farrell has lived in Maleny for ten years. She has drawn black and white portraiture drawings and sketches for the past seventeen years and spent 4 years doing hand-built clay sculptures. Recently, she has developed her personal style of using dimensional textured techniques and acrylics to create her ‘Life’ Series, which combine sculpturing and painting on canvas, and can be commissioned to reflect particular life or family events. One of this series, entitled “Nurtured” has been donated by Sandie to the Maleny Kindergarten and has been embraced as a reflection of the ideals of the Kindy. She is a member of the COMA group and participated in the ‘Maleny-Picture Perfect’ exhibition held early in 2008. She was an entrant in the ‘Sunshine Coast Art Awards’ in 2007 and won an award in the ‘Hinterland Art Awards’ for her pencil sketch, “Burdened” in 2008. Sandie has also written three children’s picture books, a junior fiction book and a parenting book and was an entrant in the ‘Premier’s Literary Awards – Unpublished Manuscript’ for 2008. In 2010, Sandie and her husband, Ray will founder and sponsor the Maleny State School Art Awards to increase awareness of art and encourage potential young artists. She is also applying for a grant to paint a dimensional mural for the Maleny State School. In 2009, Sandie was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation as part of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council Australia Day Awards for community service for her art donations to the Maleny Kindergarten and School. Philosophy Sandie hopes to remind people of the simple experiences in life that are often taken for granted, such as the joy of family, through her artwork. Her “Life” series can be commissioned and individual personal items, such as wedding dress lace or other items can be worked into the picture to create a truly unique and personal painting. The faces in these paintings are deliberately left blank so that the picture can be an ongoing depiction of the family. She loves the 'texture' of producing these dimensional art pieces which almost encourage the viewer to reach out and experience the painting through touch as well as sight. Sandie also does photography concentrating mainly on 'images of a bygone era' and children's portraiture. She produces all her artwork, under the name “Kelshan Cruthe”, which is Irish for Kelshan Creations, a name reflecting the inspiration provided by her daughter, Kelsey and son, Shane and the family’s Gaelic origins.
