Peter Hudson

Seeing a photograph of the earth taken by Apollo 17 en route to the moon, was a seminal experience for me. The image of the shimmering blue-green sphere moving through space was as incredibly beautiful as it was levelling. An arresting self-portrait. Life and art were given a new consciousness. Painting, especially landscape painting, could never be the same again.
Looking at the earth from this great distance is a powerful and metaphysical reminder of place and time, and how complex, spiritual, fragile, unique, huge, small, sophisticated and breathtakingly beautiful our planet is. Painting the land helps me remember this, and I am eternally grateful.
